Botany & ecology
Confirmed vanilla and species to specify
Literature synthesis
- Vanilla is a genus of climbing orchids. The visible green stem and alternate leaves are consistent with a vanilla vine. Several species look alike in their vegetative stage: V. planifolia remains a possibility, rather than the assigned species name for this plant.
Clear photographs of nodes, leaves and eventually flowers, together with plant provenance, will help specify the species.

Origin of cultivated vanilla
Literature synthesis
- V. planifolia is native from southern Mexico to northern Brazil and occurs in wet tropical environments. That origin should only be assigned to the Odo plant once its species is specified. Its presence in the collection already qualifies as a local planting.
