BOTANICAL RECORD
Artocarpus camansi Blanco
Breadnut · Châtaignier-pays · Moraceae
Growing
Harvesting and pruning the breadnut already over 10 m tall
Literature synthesis
- For the A. camansi at Odo, plan access to fruit and observe loaded branches. The agroforestry guide reports prolonged dieback after severe pruning of this species in the Caribbean. Do not automatically apply A. altilis pruning advice. Have major branches assessed before substantial reduction; the Odo crown structure has not been examined.
Documentation and strength of evidence
Documentation: Moderate
Claimed effect: Not evaluated
Sow fresh seeds promptly
Literature synthesis
- Collect seeds from a soft ripe fruit, clean them and sow immediately without drying or refrigeration. Keep a freely draining medium moist and seedlings partly shaded. Unlike A. altilis, root cuttings are not the appropriate propagation method for A. camansi.
Documentation and strength of evidence
Documentation: High
Claimed effect: Not evaluated
Soil, sunlight and the dry season
Botanical reference
- Prefer deep, freely draining soil, full sun for the established tree and mulch. Drought can cause premature fruit drop. Protect shallow roots when weeding.
