- Willdenow published this scientific name in 1796. “Guineense” refers to Guinea. Velvet tamarind here identifies Dialium, a genus distinct from ordinary tamarind, Tamarindus indica.

Yui, Yooyi and Atitoe
Traditional account
- “Yui” is the name reported by JB at Busua. A Ghanaian study records “yooyi” in Akan, “atitoe” in Ewe and “gyimbrong” in Waala/Dagaba. The language of Yui at Odo remains to be recorded with local speakers.
