BOTANICAL RECORD
Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg
Breadfruit · Arbre à pain · Moraceae
Growing
Mulch, Gliricidia and companion crops
Literature synthesis
- Gliricidia prunings can supply mulch; control shade and competition around breadfruit. Some systems combine breadfruit, cacao, banana and taro, but arrangements must evolve with the canopy. References give a preferred pH around 6.1–7.4. At Odo, maintain soil cover and assess amendments through soil testing; do not automatically add lime or ash.

An over-10-m tree: harvesting and canopy management
Literature synthesis
- The Odo tree already exceeds 10 m. The 4.5–5.5 m heights suggested for trees trained when young are not an instruction to cut this tree back abruptly. Priorities are to observe loaded branches, organise supported harvesting from the ground and have major crown reduction assessed by a competent person. Avoid improvised large cuts; if reduction is useful, plan it progressively after harvest with regard to branch structure.
Advice adapted to the reported stage; crown structure has not been inspected.

Preserving a cultivar and establishing new trees
Literature synthesis
- Seedless cultivars are propagated through methods including root suckers and root cuttings, preserving the parent type. Viable seeds should be sown fresh; they tolerate drying and storage poorly. Young plants benefit from light shelter, regular moisture and freely draining soil. Also watch for scales, whiteflies, spots and rots; remove diseased fruit and diagnose before treating.
