BOTANICAL RECORD
Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg
Breadfruit · Arbre à pain · Moraceae
Botany & ecology
Botanical origin source ↗Flowers, multiple fruit and reproduction
Literature synthesis
- Male flowers in elongated spikes and female flowers occur on the same tree. Approximately 1,500–2,000 flowers contribute to the multiple fruit, or syncarp. Seedless cultivars can develop fruit without fertilisation; a second tree is then unnecessary. Fruit development often takes 15–20 weeks. A tree may produce for more than 50 years. Habit and leaves vary by cultivar.

Tropical climate and planting position
Literature synthesis
- References generally give 21–32°C and 1,500–3,000 mm annual rainfall as favourable conditions. Deep, freely draining soil is preferred. At Odo, compare actual positions: a moist but unsaturated valley bottom, sheltered slope, or exposed ridge. Elevation alone does not decide suitability. Existing growth shows these individuals are vigorous, but does not yet establish sustained yield.

One species, several commonly confused plants
Literature synthesis
- Artocarpus altilis belongs to Moraceae. Jackfruit is A. heterophyllus; breadnut A. camansi is a close but distinct species. African breadnut Treculia africana belongs to another genus. Recipes, analyses and uses should not automatically be transferred between species. Seeds alone do not identify A. camansi: some A. altilis cultivars are also fertile.

Ancient domestication with an unsettled precise origin
Literature synthesis
- Pacific peoples selected and transported breadfruit over millennia. The 2004 genetic study supported origins involving A. camansi near New Guinea, with A. mariannensis hybridisation in Micronesia. A 2023 synthesis argues for a distinct A. altilis lineage domesticated around the southeastern Solomons or northern Vanuatu. Retain an Oceanian origin; do not present an exact place or single ancestor as settled.
